Hugo Weaving Cast in Marvel's Upcoming Captain America Film

Hugo Weaving, the Australian best-known for his roles as Agent Smith in The Matrix trilogy and Elrond the Half-Elven Lord of Rivendell in The Lord of the Rings trilogy, has been cast as the Red Skull in Marvel's upcoming Captain America: The First Avenger film.


Starring Chris Evans as Marvel's patriotic hero, Captain America: The First Avenger will be directed by The Rocketeer's Joe Johnston and will reach theaters on July 22, 2011.

The Red Skull is Captain America's long-time nemesis, a henchman to Adolf Hitler's Nazi regime and a feared assassin.

Captain America: The First Avenger is not Weaving's first comic book adaptation; previously, he starred as the terrorist V in 2006's V For Vendetta. Most recently, he starred in Universal's remake of The Wolfman as a Scotland Yard investigator.
